AUTOMATIC FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM
NAVIGATION MODES (GPS, VOR, LOC, BC)
NOTE: The selected navigation receiver must have a valid VOR or LOC signal or active GPS course for the
flight director to enter Navigation Mode.
PressingtheNAVKeyselectsNavigationMode.NavigationModeacquiresandtrackstheselectednavigation
source(GPS,VOR,LOC). Theightdirector followsGPSrollsteering commandswhenGPSis theselected
navigationsource.WhenthenavigationsourceisVORorLOC,theightdirectorcreatesrollsteeringcommands
fromtheSelectedCourseanddeviation.NavigationModecanalsobeusedtoynon-precisionGPSandLOC
approacheswhereverticalguidanceisnotrequired.
BackcourseModecapturesandtracksalocalizersignalinthebackcoursedirection.Themodemaybeselected
by pressing the NAV Key.Whenmakingabackcourseapproach,settheSelectedCoursetothelocalizerfront
course. The flight director creates roll steering commands from the Selected Course and deviation.
IftheCourseDeviationIndicator(CDI)showsgreaterthanonedotwhentheNAV Key is pressed, the selected
modeisarmed.IftheCDIislessthanonedot,NavigationModeisautomaticallycapturedwhentheNAV Key
is pressed. The armed annunciation appears in white to the left of the active lateral mode.

WhentheCDIhas automaticallyswitchedfromGPS toLOCduringa LOC/ILSapproach,GPSNavigation
Moderemainsactive,providingGPSsteeringguidanceuntil thelocalizersignaliscaptured.LOC Navigation
ModeisarmedautomaticallywhenthenavigationsourceswitchtakesplaceiftheAPR Key is not pressed prior
to the automatic source switch.
IfNavigationModeisactiveand eitherofthefollowingoccur,theightdirectorreverts toRollHoldMode
(wings rolled level):
•DifferentVORtunedwhileinVORNavigationMode(VORNavigationModerevertstoarmed)
•Navigationsourcemanuallyswitched(withtheCDI Softkey)
•DuringaLOC/ILSapproach,theFAFcrossedwhilein GPSNavigationModeaftertheautomaticnavigation
sourceswitchfromGPStoLOC
CHANGING THE SELECTED COURSE
IfthenavigationsourceisVORorlocalizerorOBSMode hasbeenenabledwhenusingGPS,theSelected
Course is controlled using the CRS Knob corresponding to the selected flight director (CRS1 for the pilot
side, CRS2 for the copilot side).
Pressingthe CWS Button and hand-flying the aircraft does not change the Selected Course while in
NavigationMode.TheautopilotguidestheaircraftbacktotheSelectedCourse(orGPSightplan)whenthe
CWS Button is released.
