8.1 SYNTHETIC VISION SYSTEM (SVS)
WARNING:
Use appropriate primary systems for navigation, and for terrain, obstacle, and traffic avoidance.
SVS is intended as an aid to situational awareness only and may not provide either the accuracy or reliability
upon which to solely base decisions and/or plan maneuvers to avoid terrain, obstacles, or traffic.
The optional SyntheticVisionSystem (SVS)isa visualenhancementto theProdigy®Flight Deck100. SVS
depictsaforward-looking attitudedisplayof thetopographyimmediately infrontof theaircraft.The eldof
viewis30degreestotheleftand35degreestotheright.SVSinformationisshownonthePrimaryFlightDisplay
(PFD),oronthe MultifunctionDisplay(MFD)inReversionary Mode(Figure8-132). Thedepictedimageryis
derivedfromtheaircraft attitude,heading,GPSthree-dimensional position,anda ninearc-seconddatabaseof
terrain,obstacles, and other relevant features. The terrain data resolution of nine arc-seconds,meaning that
theterrainelevationcontoursarestoredinsquaresmeasuringnine arc-secondsoneachside,isrequiredforthe
operationofSVS.Lossofanyoftherequireddata,includingtemporarylossoftheGPSsignal,willcauseSVSto
bedisableduntiltherequireddataisrestored.
TheSVSterraindisplayshowslandcontours(colorsareconsistentwiththoseofthetopographicalmapdisplay),
largewaterfeatures,towers,andotherobstaclesover200’AGLthatareincludedintheobstacledatabase.Cultural
featuresonthe groundsuchas roads,highways,railroadtracks, cities,andstate boundariesarenot displayed
evenifthosefeaturesarefoundontheMFDmap.Theterraindisplayalsoincludesanorth–southeast–westgrid
withlinesorientedwithtruenorthand spacedatonearc-minuteintervalstoassistinorientation relativetothe
terrain.
TheTerrainAwarenessandWarningSystem(TAWS)isintegrated withinSVStoprovide visualandauditory
alertstoindicatethepresenceofterrain andobstaclethreatsrelevanttotheprojectedightpath. Terrainalerts
are displayed in red and yellow shading on the PFD.
Theterraindisplayis intendedforsituationalawarenessonly.It maynotprovidetheaccuracy ordelityon
whichtobasedecisions andplanmaneuvers toavoidterrainor obstacles.Navigation mustnotbepredicated
solelyupontheuseoftheTAWSterrainorobstacledatadisplayedbytheSVS.
