ADS-Bisasurveillancetechnologybeingdeployedinselected areas.ADS-Bbroadcastsaradiotransmission
approximatelyoncepersecondcontainingtheaircraft’sposition,velocity,identication,andotherinformation.
ADS-Bcanalsoreceivereportsfromothersuitablyequippedaircraftwithinreceptionrange.Additionally,these
broadcastscanbereceived byGroundBased Transceivers(GBTs)andusedtoprovide airtrafcsurveillance
services.NogroundinfrastructureisnecessaryforADS-Bequippedaircrafttodetecteachother.
IntheUnitedStates, twodifferentdatalinks havebeenadoptedfor usewithADS-B: 1090MHzExtended
Squitter(1090ES)andtheUniversalAccessTransceiver(UAT).TheGDL90isaUniversalAccessTransceiver
(UAT).TheUATlinkisintendedforusebyaircraftthatprimarilyoperateat18,000feetandbelow.TheUAT
linksupportsFlightInformationServices-Broadcast(FIS-B).
ADS-Benablesimproved surveillanceservices, bothair-to-airand air-to-ground,especiallyin areaswhere
radarisineffectiveduetoterrainor whereitisimpracticalorcostprohibitive. Initialapplicationsofair-to-air
ADS-Barefor“advisory”useonly,enhancingapilot’svisualacquisitionofothernearbyequippedaircrafteither
when airborne or on the airport surface.
ADS-Bisintendedtobeusedbothin-ightandontheairportsurface.ADS-Bsystemsshouldbeturned“on”
--andremain“on”--wheneveroperatingintheair andontheairportsurface,unlessachangeto“standby”
wasrequestedbyATC.
TheADS-Bcockpitdisplay oftrafcis NOTintendedtobe usedasacollision avoidancesystemand does
notrelievethe pilot’sresponsibilityto“see andavoid” otheraircraft.ADS-B shallnot beused foravoidance
maneuversduringIMCorothertimes whenthereisnovisual contactwiththeothertargetaircraft. ADS-Bis
intendedonlytoassistinvisualacquisitionofotheraircraft.No avoidance maneuvers are provided for, nor
authorized, as a direct result of an ADS-B target being displayed in the cockpit.
