ENGINE PROBLEMS

Engine Will Not
Start
1. Check control positions.
Possible Cause
Corrpni.n
Fuel valve OFF.
Throttle lever in wrong
position. Move throttle lever to
CHOKE position, unless
the engine is warm (p. 27).
Refuel (p. 19).
Drain fuel tank and
carburetor (p. 67).
Refuel with fresh
gasoline (p. 19).
Clean, gap, or replace
spark plug (p. 49).
2. Check fuel. Out of fuel.
Bad fuel: mower stored
without treating or
draining gasoline, or
refueled wiih bad gasoline
Spark plug faulty,
fouled, or improperly
gapped.
Spark plug wet with
fuel (flooded engine).
3. Remove and inspect
spark plug.
Dry and reinstall spark
plug. Start engine with
throttle lever in FAST
position.
Fuel filter clogged,
carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction,
valves stuck. etc.
4. Take mower to an
authorized Honda
servicing dealer, or
refer to shop manual.
Replace or repair faulty
components as necessary.
Loss of Power
1. Check throttle position.
2. Check grass height. Grass too tall to cut. Raise cutting height
(p. 14) cut narrower
3. Check under mower
deck.
4. Check air filters.
5. Check fuel. Bad fuel: mower stored
without treating or
draining gasoline, or
refueled with bad
aasoline.
Fuel filter clogged,
carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction,
valves stuc:k, etc.
Drain fuel tank and
carburetor (p. 67).
Refuel with fresh
gasoline (p. 19).
6. Take mower to an
authorized Honda
servicinct dealer, or
refer to shop manual.
