getconf(1)

getconf(1)

NAME

getconf - get system con®guration values

SYNOPSIS

getconf [-vspeci®cation ] system_var

getconf [-vspeci®cation ] system_var pathname

DESCRIPTION

The getconf command provides an interface to the confstr(3C), pathconf(2), and sysconf(2) library routines and system calls.

The system_var argument speci®es the con®guration value desired in confstr(), pathconf(), or sysconf(). Use the ®rst synopsis form, for inquiries involving confstr(), or sysconf() (in the ®rst table below). Use the second synopsis form, for inquiries involving pathconf() (in the second table below). For inquiries involving pathconf() the pathname operand should be speci®ed.

Options

getconf recognizes the following option:

-vspecification Return con®guration variables corresponding to a particular compilation environment supported by HP-UX. If the -voption is not speci®ed, speci®cation defaults to XBS5_ILP32_OFF32. See table below for possible speci®cations and meanings.

EXTERNAL INFLUENCES

Environment Variables

LC_MESSAGES determines the language in which messages are displayed.

If LC_MESSAGES is not speci®ed in the environment or is set to the empty string, the value of LANG is used as a default for each unspeci®ed or empty variable. If LANG is not speci®ed or is set to the empty string, a default of "C" (see lang(5)) is used instead of LANG.

If any internationalization variable contains an invalid setting, getconf behaves as if all internationalization variables are set to "C". See environ(5).

International Code Set Support

Single-byte and multi-byte character code sets are supported.

RETURN VALUE

The error codes returned by getconf are:

0Success. A value corresponding to the operand was returned.

1One or more missing operands.

2Operand was not recognized.

3pathname either invalid or inaccessible.

EXAMPLES

Request the number of intervals per second:

getconf CLK_TCK

Request the maximum value of a ®le's link count:

getconf LINK_MAX /etc/passwd

Other supported inquiries include the following:

ARG_MAX

_BC_BASE_MAX

BC_DIM_MAX
