Checking the Spark Plug

NClean dirty spark plug.

NCheck electrode gap (A) and readjust if necessary – see "Specifications".

NUse only resistor type spark plugs of the approved range.

Rectify problems which have caused fouling of spark plug:

Too much oil in fuel mix.

Dirty air filter.

Unfavorable running conditions, e.g. operating at part load.

Warning!

To reduce the risk of fire and burn injury, use only spark plugs authorized by STIHL. Always press spark plug boot (1) snugly onto spark plug terminal (2) of the proper size. (Note: If terminal has detachable SAE adapter nut, it must be attached.) A loose connection between spark plug boot and ignition wire connector in the boot may create arcing that could ignite combustible fumes and cause a fire.

Installing the spark plug

NInstall the spark plug and connect the spark plug boot (press it down firmly) – reassembly all other parts in the reverse sequence.

Starter rope

To help prolong service life, observe the following points:

NPull the starter rope only in the direction specified

NDo not pull the rope over the edge of the guide bush

NDo not pull out the rope more than specified since it might break

NDo not let the starter grip snap back, guide it slowly into the housing

Replace a damaged starter rope in good time or have it replaced by your dealer.

Replacing the starter rope and rewind spring

NRemove the shroud – see "Shroud" N Unscrew oil filler cap – drain oil tank

NUnscrew fuel tank filler cap – drain fuel tank

Chain oil and fuel mixture must be stored in canisters approved for this purpose.

NUndo the screws on the fan housing and hand guard respectively

NRemove the fan housing

NTension or, if necessary, replace the starter rope or rewind spring
