Vendor Translation of MAC Addresses

The MAC address of a device is divided into two 24-bit halves. The first half is known variously as the Organizationally Unique Identifier (OUI), the “company_id” or the vendor ID, and can be used to identify the device’s manufacturer. The second half is a unique ID provided by the device’s manufacturer.

3Com Network Director can automatically determine the manufacturer of each device on the network that has a MAC address by translating the OUI portion of the MAC address from its hexadecimal representation to the manufacturer’s name. This changes the display, when the MAC Address label type is selected from View > Labels, as follows:
