Technically,youcanuseanyoftheStarLaserPrinter4’sresidentfontswhen yousendcommandsemulatinga particularprinter.Buteachemulationonly printsproperlywiththefontsdesignedforit. Furthermore,youcanonlyuse symbol sets, or arrangementsof those fonts, which that emulation can handle. So be aware that, if you try using fonts other than those recom- mended for a particular emulation,you will usually get printing in the emulation’sdefaultfont.
If you wanta characterthat’snot in the font you’reusing,don’thesitateto grab it. Just sendthe Escapesequencesthat selectyourdesiredsymbolset, print with it, then go back to your originalfont.
3.4MANAGINGFONTS
You can see whichfonts are currentlyselectedon your Star LaserPrinter4 by printinga statussheetin offlinemode,as mentionedat the beginningof this chapter.AnotherTESTmodemenu item,describedin the StarLuser- Printer4 OperationsManual, alsolets you print out a list of all the fonts availableon the printerat any givenmoment.
3.4.1 Fonts
Most popular software packages, particularlyword processors, let you choosefontsfromwithintheprogram.Theysendtheappropriatecommands to the printer and you don’tneed to understandhow they do it. MultiMate usespitch to identifydifferentfonts,for example,while WordPe&ectuses printformats.Thepointis, youmay notevenhaveto worryaboutselecting which font to use.
But not all packagesdo thejob for you.If you are in this situation,you can selectany font attributementionedabove,eitherfrom the controlpanel or by sendingan Escapesequencecommandin one of the emulationmodes.
If you use the controlpanelin programmode, selectCHARACTER.Just pressthe [ > ] buttonto get to the font attributeyou wantto set, press [ v ]
