Overview

With the Compaq NC6133 Gigabit Module, Compaq offers the industry’s first long haul Gigabit NIC. The modular approach allows a Gigabit network connection to be added to the server without having to replace the NIC. The NC6133, when added to an existing NC3131 provides three high-speed network connections through one PCI slot.

The 1000 LX upgrade module provides a scaleable transition for environments with distances requiring up to 5000 meters.

PER FORMANCE

32/64-bit Bus-mastering

The NC6133 offers the highest data transfer method available between a network and a server for high performance and low CPU utilization. The NC6133 operates in 32- or 64-bit PCI slots and uses bus-mastering technology to maximize throughput and minimize CPU utilization.

Port Bonding

Adaptive Load Balancing (ALB) and Cisco’s Gigabit EtherChannel are two port bonding methods supported by the NC6133. ALB provides both failover and balancing of transmit traffic across all NICs for increased performance. For even higher performance, Cisco’s Gigabit EtherChannel provides port failover and balancing of transmit and receive traffic across all NICs.

SECUR ITY /RELIABILITY

Network Fault Tolerance (NFT)

NFT support, sometimes called "NIC Redundancy" or "failover," enables the NIC to keep an active link if another NIC, switch or hub link fails by automatically switching to a backup NIC.

PCI Hot Plug

The NC6133 includes PCI Hot Plug support, which enables it to be replaced or added to a server without powering down the system. This feature provides increased system availability and non-stop serviceability in business-critical computing environments.

NETWORK MANAGEMENT

Standards-based

The NC6133 supports the following industry network management standards to work with a broad spectrum of software utilities.

SNMP

DMI 2.0

Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM)

EASE OF USE

Plug and Play

Fully compliant with the 2.1 PCI specification, the NC6133 uses the system resources to automatically configure its memory and interrupt settings.

Server Integration

Compaq’s SmartStart® configuration utility includes setup support for the NC6133 so it can be configured as part of the SmartStart configuration process. Compaq Insight Manager® and the Compaq Network Management System (CNMS) can collect and report SNMP statistics on NIC events.

Integrated Management Log (IML) support is provided by the NC6133 for critical event logging on Compaq servers. LEDs show link integrity and network activity for easy troubleshooting.

1000 LX specifications

The Compaq 1000 LX, released in the early 1990s, is a notable entry in the range of portable computing solutions. Positioned as a powerful yet compact laptop, it catered primarily to business professionals and mobile users who required a reliable device for work on the go.

One of the standout features of the Compaq 1000 LX is its lightweight design. At a time when laptops were often bulky, Compaq aimed to create a more portable version, weighing in at just around 5.6 pounds. This compact form factor made it easier for users to transport the device, facilitating productivity in various environments, be it in the office or on the road.

The Compaq 1000 LX was powered by an Intel 486 processor, which provided sufficient performance for basic computing tasks. With options for 4 to 8 MB of RAM, this laptop allowed users to run applications smoothly, although it was limited by the standards of later generations. The LCD display, featuring a resolution of 640x480 pixels, provided adequate screen quality for word processing and simple graphics.

Storage capabilities included an IDE hard drive, and users could choose between options of 120 to 520 MB. The inclusion of a floppy disk drive offered a means for data transfer and backups, which was essential in that era before the prevalence of USB drives and cloud storage.

In terms of connectivity, the Compaq 1000 LX featured a serial port and a parallel port, which allowed for peripheral connections, although modern standards of connectivity like USB were not yet a standard. As for power, the laptop was equipped with a lithium-ion battery that could last several hours, enabling productivity without frequent recharging.

The keyboard design was both user-friendly and durable, ensuring that typing on the Compaq 1000 LX was comfortable during extended use. Additionally, its build quality provided reliability, making it suitable for rugged environments often encountered by traveling professionals.

Overall, the Compaq 1000 LX represented a blend of portability, functionality, and solid performance. Its release contributed to the growing trend of mobile computing, paving the way for more advanced laptops in the years to come. For users in the early '90s, it offered a glimpse into the future of portable technology.
