Service icons are gray or yellow in color (or gray with yellow accents) in their "normal" state. In the "connected" state the primary color of the icon (gray or yellow) changes to green.

Errata for Windows XP device icons

Icons for services that are not available have a red "X" in their lower-right corner. Services may be unavailable because they are in use or because the necessary hard- ware (such as a modem for Dial-up Networking) is not installed.
