Thermal Management:

Animportantpartoftheoverallsystem designprocessisthermalmanagement; thermaldesignmustbeconsideredatall levelstoensuregoodreliabilityandlifetime ofthefinalsystem.Superiorthermaldesign andtheabilitytooperateinsevere applicationenvironmentsarekeyelements ofarobust,reliablepowermodule.

Afiniteamountofheatmustbedissipated fromthepowermoduletothesurrounding environment.Thisheatistransferredbythe threemodesofheattransfer:convection, conductionandradiation.Whileallthree modesofheattransferarepresentinevery application,convectionisthedominantmode ofheattransferinmostapplications. However,toensureadequatecoolingand properoperation,allthreemodesshouldbe consideredinafinalsystemconfiguration.

Theopenframedesignofthepowermodule providesanairpathtoindividual components.Thisairpathimproves convectioncoolingtothesurrounding environment,whichreducesareasofheat concentrationandresultinghotspots.

Test Setup:Thethermalperformancedata ofthepowermoduleisbasedupon measurementsobtainedfromawindtunnel testwiththesetupshowninthewindtunnel figure.Thisthermaltestsetupreplicatesthe typicalthermalenvironmentsencounteredin mostmodernelectronicsystemswith distributedpowerarchitectures.The electronicequipmentinnetworking,telecom, wireless,andadvancedcomputersystems operatesinsimilarenvironmentsandutilizes verticallymountedPCBsorcircuitcardsin cabinetracks.

Thepowermodule,asshowninthefigure,is

mountedonaprintedcircuitboard(PCB) andisverticallyorientedwithinthewind tunnel.Thecrosssectionoftheairflow passageisrectangular.Thespacing betweenthetopofthemoduleandaparallel facingPCBiskeptataconstant(0.5in). Thepowermodule’sorientationwithrespect

totheairflowdirectioncanhaveasignificant impactonthemodule’sthermal performance.
