Chapter 3 – Application Examples

The following diagram shows three uses or applications for the MultiModem EDGE wireless modem with a Bluetooth interface.

Overview of the Applications Shown Above

The following points give an overview of each example. See the following pages for setup details.

1.Download Sales & Inventory Using an Adapter as Slave

A Bluetooth adapter connected to the vending machine (a Multi-Tech MultiModem Bluetooth adapter is shown in this example) reads the sales and inventory statistics from the vending machine.

This information is sent to the Bluetooth part of the MultiModem EDGE wireless modem. Note: Sending can be accomplished within 100 meters (330 feet).

The information is then transferred from the Bluetooth part of the MultiModem EDGE to the modem part of the device.

The modem then wirelessly transmits the data through the EDGE network tower to the data acquisition server via the Internet.

2.Credit Card Verification at a Point-of-Sale (POS) Terminal Using an Adapter as a Master

A Bluetooth adapter connected to a POS terminal (a Multi-Tech MultiModem Bluetooth adapter is shown in this example) reads the sales and inventory statistics from the POS.

This information is received by the Bluetooth part MultiModem EDGE wireless modem. Note: Receiving can be accomplished within 100 meters (330 feet).

The information is then transferred from the Bluetooth part of the MultiModem EDGE to the modem part of the device.

The modem then wirelessly transmits the data through the EDGE network tower to the data acquisition server via the Internet.

3.Using a Bluetooth-Enabled PDA to Access the Internet

To access the Internet, a Bluetooth-enabled PDA connects to the Bluetooth part of the MultiModem EDGE.

Once the Bluetooth connection is made, the PDA is communicating with the modem part of the device.

The PDA then wirelessly connects through the EDGE network tower to the Internet.
