using 802.11g, you can transfer data at up to 54Mb/s (five times the speed of older 802.11b wireless net- works), and still connect to existing 802.11b products. Due to the physics of the 5GHz modem, the 802.11a band is better suited for QoS sensitive services like au- dio and video streaming.

The Bluetooth access point can be used in parallel to connect PDAs and phones directly to the Internet.

A traditional analog phone plugged into the modem is all it takes to get access to VoIP services and start enjoy- ing the benefits of next-generation telephony.

A printer can be connected directly to the USB master port of the SpeedTouch 985(i) and shared across all the devices on the home network.

DiffServ IP Quality-of-Service (QoS) and Wireless QoS such as WME prioritize data streams and guarantee lo- cal delivery of time-sensitive media to nodes on the home network.

The FLEXIBundLE architecture enables service provid- ers to define, manage and evolve the characteristics of the service offered by the SpeedTouch to the end user. This allows a SpeedTouch 985 to adopt the specific fea- tures of a differentiated service offering. The basis for this architecture is an extensive multi-role, multi-user management framework that allows each individual service to be enabled or disabled independently and re- motely.

Voice services

The SpeedTouch 985 offers two analog phone connec- tors. Once registered with a VoIP service regular phone calls can be conducted over the Internet offering all the benefits of IP telephony. The SpeedTouch 985 natively offers services like Caller ID, CLIR, call waiting, call transfer, 3-way conference and message waiting notifi- cation.

Also, Bluetooth Cordless Telephony Profile support makes it possible for users to place telephone calls over the Internet from compatible mobile phones within range of the access point.

Video services

The IP Set-Top-Box component offers support for so- phisticated application such as video interactive guide, TV web browsing or TV email through combination of the integrated MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 – part 10 decoders, MP3 decoder and web browser.

Intellectual property protection and secure content de- livery is ensured by support for DES, DVB and AES vid- eo encryption systems.

Remote Management

With the increasing complexity of the infrastructure re- quired to deliver broadband services, implementing a solution to remotely manage and troubleshoot CPE has become a necessity. The SpeedTouch 985 is fully com- pliant to DSL Forum TR-069 specification for remote management of CPE. This compliance is duly and per- manently validated through extensive interoperability testing with the major management system vendors.
