Connecting Your Loudspeakers

Normal Operation

It is critical for proper performance that all speakers (left, right and center) be con- nected in proper phase. Each C/L/R 2002 is equipped with two sets of terminals in order to facilitate bi-wiring or bi-amping should you so desire. One set of terminals, marked “high,” is connected to the high frequency crossover and drivers of the sys- tem. The other set, marked “low,” is connected to the low frequency crossover and dri- vers of the system. In normal operation there will be a jumper connecting the two red

(+)terminals and a jumper connecting the two black (-) terminals on the crossover. With the jumpers in place, simply connect either of the red (+) terminals of each

speaker to the red (+) terminal of its channel on your amplifier or receiver, and either of the black (-) terminals of each speaker to the black (-) terminal of its channel on your amplifier or receiver. It is essential that all speakers be connected in the same way to the amplifier (in phase). If you experience a great lack of bass, it is likely that one speaker is out of phase with the other.

Usually if distortion is heard when the speakers are being driven at loud lev- els, it is caused by driving (turning up) the amplifier too loud and not driving the speakers with more power than they can handle. Remember, most ampli- fiers put out their full rated power well before the volume control is turned all the way up! If your speakers distort when you play them loud, turn down the amplifier or get a bigger one.

Bi-Wire Operation

The concept of bi-wiring is that higher sonic performance (greater inner detail, higher definition, increased transparency, and improved depth) is achieved by utilizing two sets of wires to connect each loudspeaker to its channel of your amplifier or receiver. One set is connected to the high frequency crossover and drivers (marked “high”) and the other set is connected to the low frequency crossover and drivers (marked “low”). If you choose this method of operation, remove both sets of jumpers from each crossover before connecting the speakers to your amplifier or receiver. Take care to ensure that both red (+) terminals of each speaker are connected to the red (+) terminal of the appropriate channel of your amplifier using one conductor of each of the two sets of wires for each channel, and that both black (-) terminals of each speaker are connected to the black (-) terminal of its appropriate channel of your amplifier using the other conductor of each of the two sets of wires for each channel. Please bear in mind that using different types of cables for the low and high frequency hookups may alter the frequency balance of the loudspeaker as intended by the designer. This may, however, be to your liking if you prefer your speakers brighter or less bright sounding. Using a heavier gauge (lower resistance) wire on the low frequency section and a lighter gauge (higher resistance) wire on the high frequency section will result in a less bright sound, while switching the wires will result in a brighter sound.

Speaker Break-In

Your C/L/R 2002s should sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of fairly loud playing is required to reach full performance capability. Break-in allows the suspensions to work in and results in fuller bass, a more open “blossoming” midrange and smoother high frequency reproduction.
