ClearVid™ CMOS Sensor

6.1 Mega Pixels Still Image Capture UX7 HC7

Capture high-quality still images of up to 6.1 Mega Pixels (2848 x 2136 / 4:3) right from your Handycam® camcorder! This enhanced double functionality is realised by the combined power of the Enhanced Imaging Processor and ClearVidCMOS Sensor working together to process huge amounts of pixel data at high speed. With added sensitivity for high-resolution pictures even in low-light situations, your Handycam® camcorder will produce the results of a high quality still image camera.

The ClearVidCMOS Sensor is an integral component of Sony’s HD Handycam® models. This revolutionary image sensor enables high-speed processing while capturing a huge amount of pixel data, giving you high resolution, wide dynamic range, smear-free images and higher light sensitivity with lower power use.

Single and Three Imager System

All the HD Handycam® models utilise Sony’s unique ClearVidCMOS Sensor in their imaging system. With most models utilising a Single- Chip Imager System and one model with a 3-Chip Imager System, it is important to know the benefits of each system to find the model that suits you best.

Light entering through the lens is separated into the three RGB (red, green and blue) primary colours via a filter.

Each pixel on the sensor is also divided into red, green and blue colours, allowing each pixel to detect its respective colour element to process as image data.

Using a Single-Chip Imager System enables the optical system to be smaller, reducing the size of the camcorder.

3 ClearVidCMOS Sensor System FX7

Light entering through the lens is separated into the three RGB primary colours via a prism.

Each colour element is received by an independent imager for processing as image data. Using a 3-Chip Imager System results in a higher signal volume for improved sensitivity and richer colours.

This function allows you to capture beautiful still images of up to 4.6 Mega Pixels* even when recording in Movie mode. This is made possible by the combination of the Enhanced Imaging Processor handling huge amounts of pixel information read by the ClearVidCMOS Sensor. Other conventional image sensors could not offer this quality of still image recording nor in this mode.

*4.6 Mega Pixels for HDR-UX7 and HDR-HC7 only. HDR-UX5, HDR-SR1 and HDR-HC5 capture 2.3 Mega Pixels while HDR-FX7 captures 1.2 Mega Pixels.

• A maximum of 3 images can be recorded in ‘MOVIE’ mode. All still images are recorded onto Memory Stickor HDD (for HDR-SR1 only).

Smooth Slow Rec with Audio Recording^

Enhanced Imaging Processor

Another essential part of Sony’s imaging technologies is the Enhanced Imaging Processor. Using a unique algorithm, huge amounts of image information captured by the ClearVidCMOS Sensor is processed at high speed, bringing you not only High Definition movies, but also stunning still images in higher resolution and sensitivity.

ClearVid™ CMOS Sensor and Enhanced Imaging Processor

combine to give you these advantages over other image sensors:

1Wider dynamic range delivers richer colours.

2Smear-free images let you shoot clearly in bright conditions.

3High sensitivity and low noise ensure your images capture every detail clearly in low light situations.

4Low power consumption for longer recording hours.

5Advanced data reading speed to achieve high image resolution and advanced functions.

The ability to capture video and audioˆ at four times the normal recording speed means quick motions and sounds too fast for human recognition can now be recorded and experienced in smooth slow motion. This allows you to capture dramatic events such as action scenes with screeching tyres or sports with the crack of a bat. On most models, a single 3-second clip can be recorded and then played back in smooth slow motion as a 12-second video. For the HDR-FX7, a single 6-second clip can be recorded and then played back as a 24-second video.

ˆ Audio capture capability applies to HDR-UX7, HDR-UX5, HDR-HC7 and HDR-HC5 only.
