Architectural and Engineering Specifications

The smoke alarm shall be Kidde Unit 1296E or approved equal. It shall be powered by a 120VAC, 60Hz source along with a 9V battery backup. The unit shall incorporate an ionization sensor with nominal sensitivity of 0.84%/ft. The temperature operation range shall be between 40˚F and 100˚F (4˚C and 38˚C) and the humidity operation range shall be 5% - 95% relative humidity.

The smoke alarm can be installed on any standard single gang electrical box, up to a 4” octagon junction box. The electrical connection (to the alarm) shall be made with a plug-in connector. A maximum of 24 Kidde devices can be interconnected in a multiple station arrangement. The interconnect system must not exceed the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) limit of 18 initiating devices (Smoke, heat, CO, etc) interconnected, it is still possible to interconnect 6 strobe lights and or relay modules. The alarm shall provide optional tamper resistance that deters removal of the unit from the wall or ceiling.

The unit shall include a piezoelectric horn that is rated at 85dB at 10ft. The unit shall incorporate 2 LED’s. A green LED will be constantly “ON” when AC power is present. A red LED will flash once approximately every

30-40 seconds to indicate that the smoke alarm is operating properly and will flash rapidly when the unit is alarming and will remain so until the air is cleared. The red LED will be on while test B button is being pressed and will illuminate for about 1.5 seconds every 16 seconds to indicate the memory condition until unit is reset.

The unit shall incorporate two test buttons. Test button A shall test all the electronic circuitry, horn, and battery. Test button B shall test the alarms senor sensitivity.

The unit shall at a minimum meet the requirements of UL217, NFPA72, (chapter 10 & 11 2002 edition) The State of California Fire Marshall, NFPA101 (One and two family dwellings, Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Installation of Smoke Alarm

The smoke alarm should be installed to comply with all local codes having jurisdic- tion in your area, Article 760 of the National Electric Code, and NFPA 72. Make certain all alarms are wired to a single, continuous (non-switched) power line, which is not protected by a ground fault interrupter. A maximum of 1000 ft. of wire can be used in the interconnect system.

1296 specifications

The Kidde 1296 is a highly regarded combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm that offers exceptional safety features for residential use. As the need for home safety becomes increasingly paramount, the Kidde 1296 stands out by efficiently detecting two of the most critical dangers in the home: smoke from fires and carbon monoxide from fuel-burning appliances.

One of the main features of the Kidde 1296 is its dual-sensor technology. This alarm utilizes both photoelectric and ionization sensing technologies, which enhance its ability to detect various types of fires. The photoelectric sensor is particularly effective in detecting smoldering fires, which are characterized by longer burn times and produce more smoke, while the ionization sensor is optimized for quickly sensing flaming fires. This combination ensures that the device responds promptly to different fire scenarios, thus providing comprehensive protection.

Another notable characteristic of the Kidde 1296 is its electrochemical sensor for carbon monoxide detection. This advanced technology allows the alarm to accurately detect low levels of CO, which can be lethal in enclosed spaces. With its capability to monitor air quality continuously, the Kidde 1296 serves as a crucial line of defense against the silent threat of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Kidde 1296 features a loud 85-decibel alarm that emits a clear signal upon detection of smoke or carbon monoxide, alerting inhabitants promptly. Additionally, the unit is equipped with a test/reset button that allows users to ensure the alarm is functioning correctly without the need to wait for an actual emergency.

This alarm also incorporates a battery backup, ensuring it remains operational even during power outages, further enhancing home safety. The unit is designed for easy installation, making it accessible for homeowners to set up without professional assistance.

Moreover, the Kidde 1296 includes a green LED indicator light that provides visual confirmation of the device's operational status. This feature not only allows for easier monitoring but gives peace of mind that the alarm is working effectively.

Overall, the Kidde 1296 is an essential safety device that combines advanced sensing technologies with user-friendly features to offer reliable protection against two of the most dangerous threats faced in homes today—smoke and carbon monoxide. Investing in the Kidde 1296 means investing in a safer living environment for you and your family.
