Using the freezer efficiently

Freezing large items

If you would like to freeze large items e.g. turkey or ham, the glass cold plates between the drawers can be removed.

^Remove the top full-width freezer drawer, and carefully lift and slide out the glass cold plates.

Freezer calendar

The calendar on the freezer drawers indicates the suggested length of time (in months) in which various foods should be stored.

If the storage time given on the packaging differs, follow the advice on the packaging.

Defrosting

Frozen food can be defrosted in different ways:

–in a microwave oven,

–at room temperature,

–in the refrigerator (the cold given off by the frozen food helps to keep the other food cold),

–in a steam oven.

Thin pieces of meat and fish can be placed directly in a hot pan without defrosting.

Poultry It is especially important to observe proper hygiene when defrosting poultry. Never save the liquid from defrosted poultry. Drain it away and promptly wash the container, the sink and your hands. Danger of salmonella poisoning.

Fruit should be defrosted at room temperature in its packaging, or in a covered bowl.

Most vegetables can be cooked while still frozen. Simply place directly into boiling water or hot oil.
