Analog Telephones on the NBXâ System

Quick Reference Guide

NOTES: For additional NBX telephony features, see the NBX Telephone Guide. However, the Feature Codes described throughout that guide, including in Appendix A, are available only from NBX telephones, not from an analog telephone.

Access the Automated Attendant

From any telephone on the system, dial 500.

Transfer a Call

1.Place or receive a call.

2.While on the call, press and release the switch hook to put the call on hold.

3.Listen for the dial tone. Dial the number to which you want to transfer the call.

4.As soon as you hear ringing, hang up the telephone to complete a blind (unannounced) transfer, or wait until the recipient answers, announce the call, and then hang up. The call is transferred when you hang up.

Participate in a Conference Call

Although you cannot initiate a conference call from your analog telephone, someone else can include you on a conference call initiated on an NBX telephone.

Forward Incoming Calls to Voice Mail

If you do not answer your analog telephone, the system transfers incoming calls to your voice mailbox or wherever you have specified for your calls to go when you do not answer (called the call coverage point).

See the NetSetUser Help for how to set your coverage point.

Call Park — Retrieve a Parked Call

Although you cannot park a call from your analog telephone, you can retrieve a parked call. From your telephone or from any telephone on the system, dial the Call Park extension to which the call was parked.

Hunt Groups — Log In and Log Out

Analog telephones on an NBX system can be configured to be members of hunt groups, but you cannot directly log into or out of a hunt group from your analog telephone.

To log in or out of a hunt group, connect to the NetSet utility from your computer. See the NBX Telephone Guide.

NBX specifications

The 3Com NBX is a pioneering IP Telephony solution that emerged in the late 1990s, designed to streamline communications for small to mid-sized businesses. The NBX system provides a comprehensive set of features that makes it an attractive choice for organizations looking to modernize their voice communications while leveraging their existing data networks.

One of the main characteristics of the 3Com NBX system is its ability to provide voice over IP (VoIP) capabilities, which use digital signals to transmit voice data over the internet instead of traditional telephone lines. This technology not only reduces operational costs associated with phone line installations and long-distance calls, but also allows for integration with various applications and services that leverage the internet for enhanced productivity.

The NBX architecture supports a wide variety of telephony features that enhance user experience and operational efficiency. Among these features are call forwarding, call transfer, voicemail, and automated attendant services. Additionally, the NBX offers advanced call management tools, such as call queuing, call logging, and reporting functionalities, which help businesses optimize their communication workflows.

Interoperability is another significant feature of the 3Com NBX. It is designed to work seamlessly with various third-party applications and network services, including customer relationship management (CRM) systems. This facilitates better collaboration and enhances customer service efforts. The NBX also supports the use of standard protocols such as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), which ensures compatibility with a range of external telecommunications devices and services, further embedding it within the business's existing infrastructure.

In terms of scalability, the 3Com NBX system is flexible and can easily accommodate growing businesses. As organizations expand, they can add additional phones and features with minimal disruption, making it suitable for dynamic environments. The NBX's user-friendly web interface simplifies configuration and management, allowing administrators to make changes and adjustments quickly and efficiently.

Security is also a cornerstone of the 3Com NBX design, with robust measures to protect call data and ensure user privacy. Overall, the 3Com NBX has set the standard for affordable and functional IP telephony solutions, playing a crucial role in the evolution of modern business communication systems. Its blend of advanced technology, user-centric features, and scalability has made it a favored choice for companies aiming to enhance their communication capabilities effectively.
