Subject: C-300N/C-500N P.S. Gear Valve Nut Leakage

It has come to our attention, through a number of field reports, that some C-300N and C-500N power steering gears exhibit leakage past the threaded interface between the valve body and nut.

Leakage in this area can be visually noted without removal of any parts and will appear early in the service life of the power steering gear; generally under 5,000 miles. The intensity of leakage will vary from a barely detectable “weep” to as much as 10 drops per minute. The leakage described is from the oil return (low pressure) side of the power steering gear.

Depending upon accessibility, the leakage can be repaired without removing the gear from the truck, using seal maintenance kit 254059. Spanner wrench, P/N 106234, and sealant kit, P/N 107762, will be required to follow the procedure described in the maintenance kit. Spanner wrench P/N 106234 can be ordered from OTC Tool & Equipment Company by calling 1-800-533-5338. The sealant kit P/N 107762 contains enough primer and sealant to service a number of gears and need not be obtained on a one for one basis for each seal maintenance kit P/N 254059.
