Chapter 2: Overview

2. Overview

2.1 Introduction

The Zone 4 Seismic Cabinet protects servers, networking equipment, and telephony equipment through Zone 4 seismic activity. It’s made of heavy-gauge welded steel and supports up to 2500 pounds (1134 kg) of equipment. The cabinet is also ideal for use in high vibration areas or areas with high load capacities. It conforms to EIA standards for 19" equipment mounting. Use it in different applications with 19-inch rackmount equipment and fans.

The top of the cabinet features two cable entry ports with caps and grommets, and two fan-ready cutouts with finger guards. With its “chimney” effect, the cabinet cools mounted equipment by drawing cool air through louvers and venting the heated air through the top.

Two models are available:

RM5100A: 39.37" deep Zone 4 Seismic Cabinet with M6 square mounting rails

RM5110A: 31.5" deep Zone 4 Seismic Cabinet with 10-32 tapped mounting rails

Mounting hardware is not included.

2.2 Features

Both front and rear doors are hinged left and equipped with keylock flush handle and three-point latching.

Same key provides access to all doors and side panels.

Doors and side panels can be removed for easier equipment installation and upgrades.

Vented, heavy gauge steel base is designed to bolt to floor with seismic-rated fasteners.

Has louvers on lower 13 of rear door for ventiliation.

The cabinet ships fully assembled.

Black Box RMS110A, RMS100A, Zone 4 Seismic Cabinets, 45U manual Overview Introduction, Features

RMS110A, RMS100A, Zone 4 Seismic Cabinets, 45U specifications

The Black Box Zone 4 Seismic Cabinets, specifically the 45U models RMS100A and RMS110A, are engineered to provide robust protection and reliable performance for critical electronic equipment in seismic-prone areas. These cabinets are designed to comply with stringent seismic standards, ensuring that valuable technologies remain operational during and after seismic events.

One of the main features of the Black Box Zone 4 Seismic Cabinets is their high storage capacity of 45U, which allows for the accommodation of a wide range of rack-mounted equipment, including servers, networking devices, and telecommunications gear. This ample space ensures that organizations can consolidate their systems while maintaining a flexible setup that can adapt to changing technological demands.

The RMS100A and RMS110A models are equipped with advanced seismic bracing and reinforcement, following the guidelines set by the International Building Code (IBC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). This technology enhances the structural integrity of the cabinet, reducing the risk of damage to sensitive gear during seismic activities. The cabinets also feature vibration-dampening materials that absorb shock, further safeguarding the housed equipment.

Another significant characteristic of these cabinets is their environmental control systems, which help maintain optimal operating conditions. The integrated cooling mechanisms prevent overheating, which is crucial for high-performance electronic equipment. Users can also benefit from adjustable airflow options, allowing for customized cooling in response to specific equipment requirements.

Security is a top priority for the Black Box Zone 4 Seismic Cabinets; they come with lockable front and rear doors to protect against unauthorized access. Additionally, they offer modular designs that enable easy installation and integration into existing data centers or offices, streamlining the deployment process.

These cabinets also feature cable management solutions, which simplify organization and maintenance while reducing clutter. Users can easily manage the extensive cabling required for modern devices, ensuring a clean and efficient configuration.

Overall, the Black Box Zone 4 Seismic Cabinets RMS100A and RMS110A combine durability, capacity, and advanced safety features. They stand as essential solutions for businesses that prioritize reliability and protection of their critical infrastructure against seismic hazards. These cabinets empower organizations to maintain business continuity even in the face of natural disasters, solidifying their role as a trusted component of modern data management strategies.
