Owner’s manual

Introduction

Thank you for choosing B&W.

Your Nautilus™800 Series speakers are precision transducers incorporating many innovative techniques unique to B&W and capable of reproducing recorded sound to the highest standards. So that they may perform at their best, it is essential to take time and care with the installation process. In particular, you must regard the listening room as an extension of the speaker. The acoustic character of the room can have a profound effect on the final sound quality.

Please read this manual fully before unpacking and installing the product. It will help you to optimise its performance.

B&W maintains a network of dedicated distributors in over 60 countries who will be able to help you should you have any problems your dealer cannot resolve.

Unpacking (figure 1)

Fold the carton flaps right back and invert the carton and contents.

Lift the carton clear of the contents.

Remove the polystyrene tray from the top of the speaker.

Lift the speaker out of the lower tray and, resting one end side back on the tray for protection, open and remove the polythene bag.

We suggest you retain the packing for future use.

Check in the carton for:

4 self-adhesive rubber pads.

2 terminal link cables.

Cleaning cloth.

Wood is a natural material and veneers vary between batches. Expect some variation in the finish between all the speakers in a home theatre installation.

Positioning (figure 2)

If using a projection television with an acoustically transparent screen, place the speaker behind the centre of the screen. Otherwise position it directly above or below the screen, whichever is closest to ear level. Align the front of the speaker approximately level with the screen.

Fix the 4 self-adhesive pads to the base of the speaker. They give a degree of vibration isolation, especially useful if placing the speaker directly on top of a fairly flimsy

television. The flat area on top of the television may be smaller than the base of the speaker, so position the feet accordingly.

Alternatively, if you require more isolation or the support surface is not quite flat, you may use 4 pieces of malleable re-usable adhesive (for example Bostik® Blu-Tack®).

Stray magnetic fields

The speaker drive units are magnetically shielded such that the stray magnetic field outside the boundaries of the cabinet, except the front, is too low to cause distortion of the television picture in the vast majority of cases.

There are, however, some extremely sensitive televisions - some that even have to be adjusted according to their alignment with the earth’s magnetic field. If you have

aproblem, first de-gauss the television set with the speaker in place. Some have a button specially for this purpose. If not, switch off the set at the mains for 15 minutes and switch on again. Merely putting the set into standby mode is not sufficient.

If you still have a problem, try moving the speaker either forwards or backwards a little to get a more favourable juxtaposition, or space the speaker further from the television until the distortion disappears.

Because of the higher stray magnetic field in front of the speaker, we recommend you keep magnetically sensitive articles (computer discs, audio and video tapes, swipe cards and the like) at least 0.2m from the speaker.

Connections (figure 3)

All connections should be made with the equipment switched off.

There are 2 pairs of terminals at the back of the speaker to permit bi-wiring. In the Nautilus™HTM1, the lower pair feed the bass units and the upper pair feed the midrange and tweeter. In the Nautilus™HTM2, the lower pair feed the bass/midrange drive unit and the upper pair feed the tweeter.

The terminals are insulated to prevent any likelihood of electrical shock, even when the speakers are used with the highest powered amplifiers, and accept a variety of cable termination to suit most applications.

Bi-wiring is the preferred method of connection and involves the use of separate cables from the amplifier to each pair of terminals. The separation of the signal paths improves the resolution of low- level detail and allows the user to optimise the type of cable to the frequency range of use.

Should you not want to bi-wire, perhaps during the initial set-up procedure or because you do not want to see a multitude of cables in the room, short cables are provided to link both positive and both negative speaker terminals together.

When using the links, insert the spade into the slot in the side of one terminal and the crimped pin into the round side hole in the

HTM1 specifications

Bowers & Wilkins HTM1 is a high-performance center channel speaker that exemplifies the brand's commitment to audio excellence. Designed to deliver crystal-clear dialogue and seamlessly integrate into any surround sound setup, the HTM1 is a vital component for enhancing your home theater experience.

One of the standout features of the HTM1 is its advanced drive unit configuration. The speaker is equipped with a 6.5-inch Kevlar® midrange driver, which is renowned for its rigidity and low distortion characteristics. This driver is complemented by dual 6.5-inch bass drivers that provide exceptional bass response while maintaining clarity in the midrange frequencies. This thoughtful driver arrangement ensures that the HTM1 can handle dynamic soundtracks with ease, delivering a balanced audio experience perfect for movies, music, and gaming.

The HTM1 also incorporates Bowers & Wilkins' proprietary technologies. One such innovation is the use of a Decoupled Double Dome Tweeter, which significantly reduces distortion by allowing the tweeter to move independently from the cabinet. This results in a more accurate high-frequency performance, ensuring that voice clarity is maintained even during the most intense scenes. The tweeter's design is optimized for wide dispersion, allowing for an immersive listening experience that fills the room.

The speaker's cabinet is constructed from premium materials that provide both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. The curved design not only helps reduce resonances but also enhances the overall visual impact, making it an elegant addition to any home theater setup. Additionally, the cabinet is internally braced to minimize vibrations, further contributing to the HTM1's impressive sound quality.

Versatility is another hallmark of the HTM1. It can be placed on a dedicated stand, mounted on a wall, or positioned on a shelf, making it suitable for a variety of room configurations. The speaker's design allows it to blend seamlessly with other components in the Bowers & Wilkins lineup, creating a cohesive and powerful surround sound system.

In summary, the Bowers & Wilkins HTM1 is a remarkable center channel speaker that merges innovative technology with outstanding build quality. Its combination of advanced drive units, cabinet design, and proprietary acoustic technologies makes it an essential choice for anyone looking to elevate their home audio experience. Whether you are watching movies or listening to your favorite music, the HTM1 delivers unparalleled performance and clarity that enhances every listening moment.
