EAW AS90e specifications Description, Application, Performance, Physical

AS90e specifications

The EAW AS90E, widely recognized as a modern self-propelled artillery system, represents the cutting-edge in mobile firepower for contemporary military forces. Primarily designed for mechanized units, the AS90E is a refurbishment and upgrade of the original AS90, which has been in service since the late 1990s. Its enhancements aim to improve lethal efficiency, operational flexibility, and crew survivability.

One of the standout features of the AS90E is its powerful 155mm L/39 artillery gun, which can fire a range of munitions, including conventional high-explosive rounds, precision-guided projectiles, and infrared-guided shells. This versatility allows the AS90E to engage diverse targets effectively, from enemy personnel to fortified structures. The ability to fire at a maximum range of approximately 24 kilometers with standard rounds and up to 40 kilometers using extended-range munitions enables the AS90E to provide fire support from a safe distance.

Equipped with an advanced digital fire control system, the AS90E boasts rapid target acquisition and engagement capabilities. The system integrates sophisticated navigation, artillery computation, and communication technologies, allowing for quick response times and highly accurate fire. The fully automated loading system reduces the crew workload, ensuring that the artillery can deliver multiple rounds in rapid succession, significantly enhancing its operational tempo.

Mobility is another critical aspect of the AS90E. Built on a tracked chassis, the vehicle features a powerful engine that allows it to traverse various terrains, including difficult and off-road conditions. This mobility is essential for positioning the artillery in forward areas while maintaining a rapid withdrawal capability after fire missions, minimizing the risk of counter-battery fire.

Crew safety and survivability are paramount in the design of the AS90E. The chassis features armor protection against small arms fire and shrapnel, while an additional option for blast-resistant seating and other enhancements further improves crew safety. The onboard systems are designed to minimize the risk of detection, including options for silent watch capabilities that allow the system to operate in a low-noise mode.

With its combination of firepower, accuracy, mobility, and safety features, the EAW AS90E stands as a vital asset in modern artillery capabilities, reflecting the evolving demands of warfare in the 21st century. Whether in conventional conflicts or peacekeeping missions, the AS90E continues to adapt to meet the needs of armed forces worldwide.
