VNV TARGET ALTITUDE CAPTURE MODE (ALTV)
NOTE: Armed VNV Target Altitude and Selected Altitude capture modes are mutually exclusive. However,
Selected Altitude Capture Mode is armed implicitly (not annunciated) whenever VNV Target Altitude Capture
Mode is armed.
VNVTargetAltitudeCaptureisanalogoustoSelected AltitudeCaptureModeandisarmed automatically
after the VNVKey is pressed and the next VNV TargetAltitude is to be intercepted before the Selected
Altitude.The annunciation‘ALTV’indicates thattheVNV TargetAltitudeis tobecaptured. VNV Target
Altitudesareshown inthe activeight planor verticaldirect-to, andcan beenteredmanually orloaded
fromadatabase(seetheFlightManagementSectionfordetails).Atthesametimeas“TODwithin1minute”
isannunciatedinthe NavigationStatusBox,theactive VNVTargetAltitudeisdisplayedabove theVertical
SpeedIndicator(seeFigure7-11).
Astheaircraftnears theVNVTargetAltitude, theightdirector automaticallytransitionsto VNVTarget
AltitudeCaptureModewithAltitudeHoldModearmed.Thisautomatictransitionisindicatedbythegreen
‘ALTV’annunciationashingforupto10secondsandtheappearanceofthewhite‘ALT’annunciation.The
VNV Target Altitude is shown as the AltitudeReferencebesidethe‘ALTV’annunciationandremainsdisplayed
abovetheVerticalSpeed Indicator.The RequiredVerticalSpeed Indication(RSVI) isremovedonce VNV
TargetAltitudeCaptureModebecomesactive.
At50 feet from the VNV TargetAltitude, the ight director automatically transitions from VNV Target
AltitudeCapturetoAltitudeHoldModeandtracksthelevelleg.AsAltitudeHoldModebecomesactive,the
white‘ALT’annunciationmovestotheactiveverticalmodeeldandashesgreenfor10secondstoindicate
theautomatictransition.The ightdirectorautomaticallyarms VerticalPathTracking,allowingupcoming
descentlegstobecapturedandsubsequentlytracked.

ChangingthecurrentVNVTargetAltitudewhileVNVTargetAltitudeCaptureModeisactivecausesthe
ightdirectortorevert toPitchHoldMode. VerticalPathTrackingandthe appropriatealtitudecapture
mode are armed in preparation to capture the new VNV Target Altitude or the Selected Altitude, depending
on which altitude is to be intercepted first.
VNVtarget altitudes can be changed while editing the active ight plan (see the Flight Management
Section for details).
