IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS

1KRA-21 Antenna Caution- the TK-190 antenna must be cut per the antennas cutting chart and instructions. Failure to do so will result in a poorly matched antenna, poor performance and most probably excessive and damage in the transmitters final power amplifier circuit. The antenna bandwidth is only 1 MHz. The KRA-21 low band antenna can be between 6 to 12 inches long (dependent on frequency cut). It is recommended that a KLH-6SW leather swivel belt loop with a KLH-78 or KLH-90 carrying case be used to provide the greatest comfort, freedom of movement (especially when entering or exiting vehicles) and for better transmit and receive performance. When using a KMC-25A speaker microphone, tilting the radio slightly to provide a minimum 4" spacing between the wearers body and the tip of the KRA-21 antenna will optimize receive and transmit performance. A KLH-6SW swivel loop and KLH- 78/90 carrying case can help facilitate this orientation.

2Important Note Regarding Intrinsically Safe Certification: Using an Intrinsically Safe battery on a radio does not constitute an Intrinsically Safe (I.S.) radio. All Kenwood I.S. radios must be certified at Kenwood by inspection, logging & proper labeling. The appropriate I.S. labor code must be specified on all I.S. radio orders and the proper model I.S. battery must be used with the radio. Kenwood I.S. batteries can be purchased separately for existing Kenwood certified I.S. radios. Intentionally or inadvertently representing a Kenwood radio as I.S. without proper Kenwood certification can result in serious safety and/or legal liability issues for your company. For intrinsically safe models TK-[190]/280/380/290/390/480/481: Meets Intrinsically Safe Classes I, II & III, Div. 1, Groups C, D, E, F, G hazardous locations and Non-Incentive Class I, Div. 2, Groups C, D hazardous locations.

3AA refillable packs DO NOT meet any of the MIL-STD environmental standards, nor are they water-resistant or Intrinsically Safe approved.

Actual battery life is dependent on battery condition, type, quality, temperature, and use habits. Alkalines exhibit non-linear voltage vs. current drain characteristics, therefore radio transmit power will lower and decrease during transmit and as the battery is drained. Nominal Life (hrs.) 5-5-90 duty cycle, battery save off, scan off. See chart below:

4KVC-5A & KVC-6A has the following features: Accommodates Speaker/Microphones of KMC-25/26 (for KVC-5), and KMC-17/21 (for KVC-6), with retainer brackets; Rapid Charge LED (red) -- "on" when portable radio is properly seated and battery is in rapid charge mode, Trickle Charge LED (green) -- "on" when the battery is fully charged and the charger is in the trickly charge mode, repeat enable LED (yellow) -- "on" when the Automatic Enable switch is on and the portable is removed (it goes "off" when portable is inserted), and Automatic Repeat Enable Switch (activates the vehicular repeater units, e.g. Pyramid Communications brand SVR units). Note: These units are ONLY charger units. They are NOT vehicular adapters with RF, P.A., AF P.A., antenna connector, speaker & mobile hand mic. (a.k.a.; "console", "vehicular console", "convert-a-com", "jerk & run").

5Retain the screws included with the metal belt clip (included with radio). These are required to attach the KBH-8 or KBH-8DS. Screws also available from Parts Dept.: Part # N99-2004-05.

6KMC-25is not compatible with the TK-190 due to the effects of RF on it at low band frequencies; the KMC-25A is the compatible model. The KMC-26 Speaker microphone with antenna connector CANNOT be used due to the inadequate ground plane properties on a speaker microphone at low band frequencies (the TK-190 does not have an RF pin on its accessory connector).

7Important Note regarding KNB-21N/22N/22NC:

-NiMH batteries will exhibit reduced capacity while exposed to temperatures below 14°F(-10°C) and become virtually unusable below - 4°F or (-20°C). NiMH batteries are commonly used in extreme low temperature environments (ex: northern latitudes, refrigerated warehousing, etc.) by keeping the portable next to the body under the users coats. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold should be avoided for proper radio operation.

-NiMH batteries capacity life is slightly lower than NiCd: NiCd : 70% at 500 cycles vs. NiMH (1600 mAh): 60% at 500 cycles

8Meets Intrinsically Safe requirements of Classes I, II, III, Division 1, Groups C, D, E, F, G, & Non-Incendive Class I, Division 2, Gropus C, D hazardous locations. The KNB-22NC is labeled "KNB-22NC is an authorized alternate to KNB-17B" and therefore the KNB-22NC can be sold into existing portable fleets using KNB-17BK and not compromise the portables I.S. certification. The KNB- 22NC does NOT require re-adjustment of the Low Battery Warning settings. Portables previously inspected & readjusted by Kenwood Tuning Dept. or the dealership for KNB-17B Low Battery Warning should be re-adjusted for the Low Battery Warning factory default setting (per the service manual).
