The PDR-870 is a high performance Closed Caption Decoder for the NTSC and PAL systems. It is capable of processing and displaying all standard closed caption format transmissions--including the EIA-608 Extended Character Set--in the manner of a typical closed caption decoder. A stable input video source is required.

Nine standard data channels are supported by the PDR-870: Captions channels 1 thru 4 (CC1-CC4), Text channels 1 thru 4 (T1-T4) and Extended Data Services (XDS). The various decoding channels are selectable by four front-panel toggle switches. Additional front-panel toggle switches provide NTSC/PAL video standard selection, drop-shadow or box character keying, and internal/external video. The internal video function allows the PDR-870 to generate its own video as a medium for producing open captions.

In addition, the PDR-870 can accept an RS-232 data stream and directly produce open captions, serving as a “character generator decoder.” Along with it’s powerful decoder functions, the PDR-870 can serve as an accurate “V-Chip” ratings monitor. All rating information described by EIA-744 may be displayed on-screen by the PDR-870. Both TV Parental Guidelines and Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) ratings are supported.

The PDR-870 can recover incoming Line 21 data and send it to a computer terminal via the RS-232 port. This data may be recovered with or without the embedded closed caption control codes.

The PDR-870 can also perform a unique data conversion to reveal the “non-printing” characters that are part of the closed caption control codes.

Designed with the professional user in mind, the PDR-870 processes baseband video in either composite or S-Video formats. A rear-panel push- button switch is used to select the input/output format. The selected video mode is displayed at the front panel by a pair of green LEDs.

The composite video format uses a single high- impedance, looping input with two outputs. The S- Video format can use standard 4-pin mini-DIN connectors or BNCs for its input/output. The video performance is outstanding with differential phase and gain errors limited to less than 0.1° and 0.1% respectively.

The un-weighted signal-to-noise ratio approaches 70dB. AC-Coupled, complementary differential input amplifiers assure high common mode noise rejection while discrete phase-linear keyers provide clean insertion of the decoded characters into the video image.

Packaged in Link’s 1RU 800-Series chassis, the PDR-870 is both rugged and reliable. All Link Electronics products are covered by one of the best warranties in the industry, 10-years including parts and labor. High performance, flexibility, and economy are equally represented in the PDR-870 CG, Data Recovery Decoder .
