The eight Digital Vari-Programs automatically calculate ideal settings for common shooting situations. Just select a mode appropriate to your shooting situation and let the D40X do the rest.

Or use the P/S/A/M modes for further creative control. With P (Programmed Auto), S (Shutter-Priority Auto), A (Aperture-Priority Auto) and M (Manual) modes, you can control shutter speeds or apertures and determine exposure compensation, metering and white balance options. You can also turn the flash on or off,

control the flash mode and determine the flash level.
