LIMBING AND PRUNING

WARNING: Be alert for and guard
against kickback. Do not all ow the moving
chain to contact any other branches or obje cts
at the nose of the guide bar when limbing or
pruning. Allowin g such contact can result in
serious injury.
WARNING: Nev er climb into a tree t o
limb or prune. Do not stand on ladders, plat -
forms,a log, or in any position w hich can cause
you to lose your balance or controlof the saw.
IMPORTANTPOINTS
SWork slowly, keeping both hands firmly
grippedon t he saw. Mai ntain secure footing
and balance.
SWatch out for springpoles. Springpoles are
small size limbs which can catch the saw
chainand whip towar d you or pull you off bal-
ance. Use extreme caution when c utting
small size limbs or slender material.
SBe alert for springback. Watch out for
branches that are bent or under pressure.
Avoid being struck by the branch or the
sawwhen the tens ion in the wood fibers is
released.
SKeep a clear work area. Frequently clear
branches out of the way to avoid tripping
over them.

LIMBING

SAlwayslimb a tree after it is cut down. Only
thencan limbing be done s afely and prop-
erly.
SLeave the larger limbs underneath the felled
tree to support the tree as you work.
SStart at the base of the felled tree and work
toward the top, cutting branches and limbs.
Remove small limbs with one cut.
SKeep the tree between you and the chain .
Cut from the side of the tree opposite the
branchyou are cutting.
SRemove larger, supporting branches with
the cutting techniques described in BUCK -
ING WITHOUT A SUPPORT.
SAlways use an overcut to cut small and free-
ly hanging limbs. Undercutting could caus e
limbs to fall and pinch the saw.

PRUNING

WARNING: Limit pruning to limbs
shoulder height or below. Do not cut if
branches are higher than your shoulder. Get a
professional to do the job.
SMakeyour first cut 1/3 of the way through the
bottom of the limb.
SNextmake a 2nd cut all the way through
thelimb. Then c ut a third overcut leaving a
1to 2 inch (2.5 to 5 cm) c ollar from the truck
of the tree.
