SAP COMPATIBILITY FOR THE SAMSUNG ML-4050N PRINTER

SAP creates a spool job to print a report or any other type of document. The spool job contains all of the information that is necessary to print an SAP document. An output job contains information about the chosen Output Device, the format type (portrait, landscape, duplex, simplex etc), and the resolution. The output job and the output data are unknown to the spool job. The data is stored separately from the required output information in the TemSe (temporary sequential objects) database. The Spool Work Process delivers the spool jobs. When created, a spool job activates the Spool Work Process and delivers the print job according to the access method settings.

The SAP Spool System performs the following spool request and print request tasks:

Storing the spool requests

Generating the Output/Print requests for printers

Formatting data for the output devices.

Device Type

The Device Type stores the information needed to generate the device-specific, output-ready data stream. SAP uses device definitions to define a printer. The Device Type is modifiable at any time.

Printer Driver

Both the SAP Server and the SAP Client received an installation of the ML-4050N printer driver.

Test Scenarios

The tests included several test scenarios designed to verify the compatibility of the Samsung ML-4050N with SAP. The test scenarios include the following:

Importing a Device Type

Creating an Output Device

Copying a Device Type

Using Basic Driver Features

Handling Print Jobs

Using Spool Access Methods

Loading

Using PJL Commands

Importing a Device Type

Description

To use a device with SAP you must import the Device Type file to the SAP environment. SAP uses PRI files as the Device Type files for Printers. The Device Type also includes a list of supported formats for initializing the printer. Printer initialization defines the device specific features for SAP.

Test Methodology

The Samsung PRI file import used a SE38 transaction.

Observation

Importing the Device Type file for the Samsung ML-4050N printer to the SAP environment succeeded without any issues.

Creating an Output Device

Description

SAP uses the term Output Device to describe the destination for a print job. You must create an Output Device in SAP and map it to the imported printer Device Type. The Output Device settings allow you to specify the available printing features to SAP.

Test Methodology

The lab used an SAP Client to log on to a session with the SAP Server. They imported the Samsung PRI file using a SE38 transaction. Then they mapped the Output Device to the Samsung PRI file.

Observation

The lab successfully created the Output Device for the Samsung Device Type without any issues.
