Hvis HDMI-enheden (modtager, tv) ikke er kompatibel med komprimerede formater (Dolby digital, DTS), udsendes lydsignalet som PCM.

Sekundær- og effektlyd høres ikke med normale DVD’er.

Visse Blu-ray diske har ikke sekundær- og effektlyd.

Denne digitale udgangsopsætning påvirker ikke den analoge (V/H) lyd eller HDMI-lydudgangen til TV’et. Den påvirker den optiske lydudgang og HDMI-lydudgangen, hvis du har tilsluttet til en modtager.

Når afspilleren udsender HD-lyd bitstream (Dolby TrueHD eller DTS-HD Master Audio) fra det optiske stik til en HDMI 1.3-modtager, høres kun 2-kanals PCM-lyd.

Hvis du afspiller MPEG-lydspor, udsendes lydsignaler som PCM uanset valg af digitalt output (PCM eller Bitstream).
