TELEMETER

(for models with telemeter scale on the dial)

●The telemeter can prov ide a rough indica tion of the distan ce to the source of
light and sound.
●The telemeter indi cates the distan ce from your locatio n to an object that emit s
both light and sound. For ex ample, it can indicate the dis tance to the place
where lightning stru ck by measuring the time ela psed after you see a flas h of
lightning until you hear the s ound.
●A flash of lightning rea ches you almost imme diately while the soun d travels to
you at a speed of 0.33 km /second. The di stance to the source o f the light and
sound can be calculat ed on the basis of this d ifference .
●The telemeter scal e is graduated so tha t the sound travels at a s peed of 1 km in
3 seconds.*
*Under the condition of temperature of 20 °C(68 °F.)
The telemeter provid es only a rough indica tion of the distance t o the place
where lightning stru ck, and therefore, th e indication cannot b e used as the
guideline to avoid the dange r of lightning. It should al so be noted that the
speed of the sound dif fers depend ing on the tempera ture of the atmos phere
where it travels.
