Drying Guide
Bedspreads Choose heat for the ty pe fabric used. Dry one double or two single spreads at once. Che nille and
tufted spreads will shed lint and should be dried alone. New spreads will contain loose lint. Tumble
new spreads on NO HEAT s etting before wash ing to remove loose l int. These sprea ds may be dried
completely.
Blankets Electric DELICATE or NO HEAT cycl es. If the manufac turer recommends dry ing the blanket i n the dryer, follow
the Wool instructions below. Do not stretch the bl anket because of t he wiring. Some el ectric blankets
may have insulation on the thermostats or on the wiring which will not withstand dryer heat. Do not dry
in dryer unless the b lanket manufacturer says it can be do ne.
Synthetic Fibers DELICATE or NO HEAT cycles. Some of thes e blankets are fluffy and will she d lint. Tumble on NO
HEAT setting before w ashing to remove l oose lint. Use a ge ntle wash method, then dry in dryer u ntil
just dry. The lint fi lter may need to be cleaned during t he drying.
Thermal

AUTOMATIC REGULAR cycle.
Wool Agitation and tumbling contribute to the shrinkage and felting of wool. We cannot guarantee that wool
will not shrink. However, if care is taken and the blanket manufacturers instructions are foll owed,
satisfactory results should be obtained. Wash by the soak me thod with as littl e agitation as poss ible.
After washing, stretch bla nket gently in both directio ns. Use approximately fi ve dry bath towels and
place them between fold s in blanket. This will "cushion it to l essen the tumbling. Set dryer for 20
minutes on the TIME DRY cycle. Use REGULAR heat setting, if it is available on your dryer. Check
blanket when timer rea ches 10. Wool blank ets must be remove d from the dryer when damp. Stretch
gently to shape and finish drying over two clotheslines or in a flat position.
Quilts Choose heat and cyc le for fabric. Filli ng and cover must be completely wash able. Old quilts ma y be too
fragile to machine wash or dry. Quilts filled with cotton may become lumpy. Quilting should be close
together. Remove from dryer slightly dam p and stretch gen tly to shape. Quilt ed articles may sh rink if
over dried.
Mattress Pads Material in mattress pads is made of eit her cotton or syn thetic fibers. Read fiber content l abel, found on
your mattress pad, t o determine what t ype of fiber was us ed to manufacture t he pad. READ AND
CAREFULLY FOLLOW the f abric care instruc tions supplied b y the mattress pad m anufacturer. Some
pads made of syntheti c fibers are very h eat sensitive. Th ese pads can be flam mable if over-heated or
over-dried. TO AVOID A FIRE HAZARD, DO NOT OVER-DRY mattress pads. Remove pads from the
dryer while they are still dam p.
Slip Covers Choose heat for fabr ic. Close zippers. Dry one couch c over, two chair cov ers or five or si x pillow covers
at one time. Remove f rom dryer when sli ghtly damp. Press pleats if necess ary and replace on f urniture
immediately. Stretch f abrics and knits should be dri ed completely so they will fit s nugly when replaced
on furniture.
Pillows Feather and
Down-Filled
Ticking must be strong and seams secure. If in doubt, sew pillow into a case or use a zippered
pillowcase to prevent feathers from comi ng out. After wash ing, shake pillow to fluff feathers. Dry one
large or two smaller pi llows. Use TIME DRY c ycle. Use LOW or M EDIUM heat setting if it is available
on you dryer. Shake and reposition pillows several times during drying. Pillows must be dry in the
center to prevent mildew. Drying may take two hours or longer. Reset dryer timer if necessary. The
odor of wet feathers is not pleasa nt. However, the odor will disapp ear once the pillows dry.
Fiber-Filled
(polyester)
Follow manufacturers directions.
Foam Rubber Do not dry in the dryer.
Curtains Cotton AUTOMATIC R EGULAR or TIME DRY c ycles. Remove damp i tems for ironing o r dry completely, then
steam iron.
Fiberglass DO NOT DRY IN THE DRYER unless recommended by the manufacturer. F iberglass may shre d.
Particles may remain in the dryer and ru b off on the next lo ad. This could ir ritate the skin. Beta
fiberglass may be dri ed in the dryer if recommended by the manufacturer.
Synthetic
Fibers
DELICATE or NO HEAT cycl es. Allow room for tumbling to prevent wrinkling. Delica te or sheer
curtains must be dri ed by themselves so they will not be sn agged by hooks or cr ushed by other cl othes
in the load. Some shee r curtains are heat s ensitive. Dry 10 minutes only, plu s the cool down perio d.
Remove from dryer imme diately and hang. I f the dryer has be en heated from a pr evious load, NO
HEAT setting may be s ufficient.
Draperies Remove hooks and weights b efore washing. Choo se heat for fabri c and allow space i n the dryer for
tumbling. Some draperies may be removed when slightly dam p and hung immediately. Line d draperies
should be dry-cleaned beca use they have a tendency to puck er.
