Malen/snijden, boren in metselwerk, beton, metaal en andere materialen kan stof, nevel en dampen veroorzaken die chemicaliën bevatten waarvan bekend is dat zij ernstige of dodelijke verwondingen of ziekten kunnen veroorzaken, zoals ziekten van de luchtwegen, kanker, geboorteafwijkingen en andere reproductieve letsels. Als u niet vertrouwd bent met de risico's die gepaard gaan met het betreffende proces en/of materiaal dat wordt gesneden of met de samenstelling van het middel dat wordt gebruikt, lees dan het veiligheidsinformatieblad door en/of raadpleeg uw werkgever, de fabrikant/leverancier van het materiaal, overheidsinstanties zoals OSHA en NIOSH evenals andere inlichtingsbronnen voor gevaarlijke stoffen. Zo hebben bijvoorbeeld Californië en sommige andere overheden lijsten gepubliceerd van stoffen waarvan bekend is dat zij kanker veroorzaken, toxisch zijn voor de voortplantingsorganen of andere schadelijke gevolgen hebben.

Houd stof, nevel en dampen onder controle bij de bron waar mogelijk. Gebruik hiervoor goede werkpraktijken en volg de aanbevelingen van de fabrikanten/leveranciers, OSHA/NIOSH, en beroepsverenigingen. Water dient te worden gebruikt om stof te onderdrukken wanneer nat snijden mogelijk is. Wanneer het gevaar van inademing van stof, nevel en dampen niet kan worden geëlimineerd, moeten de operator en de omstanders altijd een respirator dragen die is goedgekeurd door NIOSH/MSHA voor de materialen die worden gebruikt.

Silica is en basisbestanddeel van zand, kwarts, baksteenklei, graniet en talrijke andere mineralen en stenen. Herhaald inademen en/of inademen van aanzienlijke hoeveelheden in de lucht verspreide kristallijne silica kan ernstige of dodelijke ziekten van de luchtwegen veroorzaken, waaronder silicose. Bovendien hebben Californië en enkele andere overheidsinstanties inadembare kristallijne silica aangeduid als een stof waarvan bekend is dat zij kanker veroorzaakt. Neem bij het snijden van dergelijke materialen altijd de hierboven vermelde voorzorgen i.v.m. de luchtwegen.
