Glossary
APERTURE The opening in an optical system defined by a lens or baffle
that establishes the field of view.
ASCII American Standard Code for Informat ion Interchange. A 7
bit-plus-parity code representing 128 letters, numerals,
punctuation marks, and control characters. It is a standard
data transmission code in the U.S.
ASYMMETRIC WIDTH
GROWTH
Non-uniform growth of elements in a printed symbol.
AUTODISCRIMINATION The ability of an interface controller to determine the code
type of a scanned bar code. After this determination is made,
the information content can be decoded.
AVERAGE BAR WIDTH
GROWTH
Average deviation of bars from nominal widths over the
entire symbol.
BAD CHECK DIGIT Error message resulting from failure of the check digit to
calculate properly.
BAD DATA CHARACTER Error message caused by failure of one or more data
characters to decode properly.
BAD PRINT CONTRAST Error message due to lack of contrast between the
background and the bars of the symbol.
BAR The dark element in a printed bar code symbol.
