5.4 Upgrading Memory and Replacing Hot-Swap and LRU
Components
5.4.1 Preventing Static Electricity
This section provides procedures for replacing
all Hot-Swappable and LRU components,
including procedures for replacing or adding
system memory.
The components inside your computer are
extremely sensitive to static electricity, also
known as electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD
can permanently damage electrostatic
discharge-sensitive components in your server.
To prevent ESD damage, follow these
guidelines before opening the server case:
1. Turn off the server and unplug the power cord
before opening the case.
2. Wear a grounding wrist strap and attach it to
a bare metal part of the server, workbench, or
other grounded connection.

3. Do not insert any object into the vent holes on
the case or the power supply. Touch a bare
metal surface on the back of the computer, a
bare metal surface on your workbench, or
other grounded object before handing DIMMs
or other components.
