La conexión equipotencial es la práctica de conectar de manera intencional todos los sistemas puestos a tierra en la misma rejilla de puesta a tierra o conectando todas las rejillas de puesta a tierra de todos los sistemas a través de metales en el suelo o el subsuelo para crear una zona equipotencial. Cuando ocurren tormentas eléctricas, el alto voltaje que producen las corrientes eléctricas en todos los sistemas existirán en los cables bajo tierra, por lo tanto todos estos cables tendrán el mismo potencial eléctrico y básicamente podrán eliminar las descargas eléctricas que existan entre los sistemas.
