Chapter 5: Connecting to the Network

Label the fiber optic cable to indicate which fiber is receive and which is transmit. Cabletron Systems fiber optic cable is labeled so that one fiber is labeled 1, and the other fiber is labeled 2 at both ends of the cable. If the cable was not purchased from Cabletron Systems, label the cable as described above.

Do not touch the ends of the fiber optic strands, and do not let

!the ends come in contact with dust, dirt, or other contaminants.

C AUT IO N Contamination of the ends causes problems in data transmissions. If the ends become contaminated, clean them with alcohol using a soft, clean, lint-free cloth.

Use the following steps to connect a fiber optic link segment to the SEHI:

1.Remove the protective plastic covers from the fiber optic ports on the applicable port on the module and from the ends of the connectors on each fiber strand.

2.Attach the fiber labeled 1 to the applicable RX port, on the SEHI. See Figure 5-1.
