Restoring Your Operating System

INSPIRON

You can restore your operating system in the following ways:

System Restore can restore your computer to an earlier state without affecting data files. Use System Restore as the first solution for restoring your operating system and preserving data files.

Dell Factory Image Restore returns your hard drive to the original state from when it was shipped to you. All data on your hard drive will be permanently deleted, including any programs you have installed. Use Dell Factory Image Restore only when System Restore does not resolve your operating system problem.

If you received an Operating System disc with your computer, you can use it to restore your operating system. However, using the Operating System disc also deletes all data on the hard drive. Use the disc only when System Restore does not resolve your operating system problem.

System Restore

The Windows operating system provides a System Restore option. If system changes such as hardware and software updates cause your computer to become unstable, you can use System Restore to restore it to an earlier state (without affecting data files). You can undo the last system restore.

NOTICE: Regularly back up your data files. System Restore does not monitor your data files or recover them.

NOTE: The instructions in this document are written for Windows default view and do not apply if you have set your DellTM computer to the Windows Classic View.
