Preparing the Managed

Access Points

The 3Com® Unified Switch 24 supports these 3Com access points:

3Com Wireless 7760 11a/b/g PoE Access Point (3CRWE776075)

3Com Wireless 8760 Dual Radio 11a/b/g PoE Access Point (3CRWE876075)

The AP 7760 and AP 8760 are dual function access points and have two start-up modes: Stand-aloneand Managed. The start-up mode determines how the access point operates.

Stand-alone mode: The access point operates as an independent fully-functional standalone device. This is the default operating mode of the access point.

Managed mode: The access point operates as a device that is dependent on the 3Com Unified Switch 24 for management and control. Managed mode is only used if you are operating the 7760 and 8760 with the 3Com Unified Switch 24.

In order to use the access points with the 3Com Unified Switch 24, you must first prepare the access points as follows:

1Ensure the access point Stand-alone firmware is at the minimum required level.

2Ensure that a Managed firmware image is present on the access point.

3Set the access point to Managed mode.

The following sections, “Preparing the 7760 Access Point” and “Preparing the 8760 Access Point”, describe how to prepare the 3Com access points for use with your Unified Switch 24.
