For example, when your subject is at the edge of the picture frame, not in the center, first move the camera slightly so that the subject is in the center of the autofocus frame, then press the shutter release button halfway to focus. While keeping the button pressed, recompose the picture, and press the button fully. (See "Taking Photographs II" on p. 19). By doing this, photographs with any required composition can be taken.
Manual focus is also possible.
