Rex Pemberton - Young

Aussie Adventurer

Rex Pemberton has completed his ‘Seven Summits’ quest, taking him into the record books as the youngest Australian to climb seven of the highest peaks over the four corners of the globe, in less than two years.

Already the youngest Australian to summit Everest and having conquered

five of the seven summits, Rex has now completed his bid to climb the highest mountain on every continent.

Accompanying Rex on his quest was a Panasonic 3CCD SD video camera. This model is light and compact, weighing just 243g (without battery). It was easily carried in Rex’s pocket to shoot MPEG2 video directly to SD cards for downloading to computer once he returned to base camp.

Rex explains: “I was shooting footage for a documentary on the ‘Seven Summits’ expedition. The camcorder’s small size meant it can easily be carried right to a summit and kept secure, warm and accessible in a jacket pocket. Weight is really important on a solo climb – for example at Mt McKinley I had to carry around 100 kilos of gear and supplies. Also, as the camcorder doesn’t use moving parts to tape, it is more resilient to the rigours of a climb.

“It shoots in 16:9 and uses a 3CCD camera system, so it’s got the ideal combination of a great picture and compact size for this expedition.I find the 3CCD technology is of the highest quality, which is what I demand in a small, lightweight documentary camera.”

“The O.I.S. system compensates for handshake when shooting video. This is great for telephoto shooting. The image is much smoother, plus if you are tracking or following someone and walking while shooting, it takes a lot of the movement out of the image. This is especially important for all of the hand held shots that make up such a large portion of my productions.”
