NFC detection

The NFC detection area (illustrated in grey) is located in the upper part of the outside of the fold, opposite the earpiece.

To use NFC, you must open the device. Touch the service tag or point of sales device with the detection area, as shown in the picture.

The reading range is typically 0 to 3 centimeters.

When the tag is recognized, a corresponding notification is displayed.

Service tags

A tag can contain a shortcut, which can be an SMS-based service, a URL of an internet-based service, a business card, or a phone number of a telephone service.

The Nokia NFC phone is compatible with non battery-powered (passive) tags. Use the following tag types: MIFARE® (Standard, Standard 4k, Ultralight, and DESFire), Sony® FeliCa (non-secure), and Innovision [Jewel (read-only) and Topaz]. You may obtain tags from these manufacturers or from a local supplier. You may also use other ISO14443-4 compliant tags or cards.

Note: Different tag and card implementations vary on the antenna size and on other electrical characteristics. Perform a test for interoperability with your selected tag implementation before usage.

Payment and ticketing

The device can be used as a contactless payment card or ticket in regions where contactless payment or ticketing is supported. Before you can start using the device for payment or ticketing, you need to apply for the payment card or ticket to be installed to the device from your card issuer. For payment use, the card issuer is typically your bank; for public transportation, it is the public transport operator of your location.

Note: When an external NFC reader is detected, the corresponding secure application is launched on the device. Depending on the degree of activation, confirmation or a passcode is requested.

To set the security level, select Menu > NFC > Secure elem sett. > Activation level. Select Always active to allow the access of an external NFC reader to the secure element without confirmation. Select Ask first or Ask passcode first to allow the access with confirmation or only with the passcode.

If the activation level is set to Ask first or Ask passcode first, the secure element remains active for 60 seconds after confirmation or after entering the passcode. Touch the external reader within this active time to perform the payment or ticketing.
