Chapter 3: MIDI Functions

Program Changes

The way the DG8 sends and responds to MIDI Program Change commands was designed to imitate the way Programs – whether Primary, Layer or Split – are selected from the front panel buttons. This is an important concept to understand and the following examples will help to illustrate how this works in the real world.

Specific MIDI operations are explained with these examples:

1.When the DG8 is playing Primary Sounds only (not in a Layer or Split) and you press a Keyboard Bank button, the DG8 recalls the last Keyboard Program that was used in that Bank and transmits its MIDI Program Number on the Basic Channel.

If you use the ▲ or ▼ arrows to select another Keyboard Program in that Bank, the MIDI Program Number that corresponds to each Keyboard Program as it comes up in the display is also sent on the Basic Channel.

MIDI Program Numbers 000 through 003 correspond to DG8 Keyboard Programs Piano 1 “A” through “D”; MIDI Program Numbers 004 through 007 correspond to DG8 Keyboard Programs Piano 2 “A” through “D” and so on up to MIDI Program 059.

Card Programs are easier to keep track of since they correspond with MIDI Program Numbers exactly: Card Program 000 = MIDI Program Number 000, Card Program 001 = MIDI Program Number 001, and so forth on up to 127.

2.Since the Layer sound comes from the same sound banks as the Primary Sounds (either the Keyboard Banks or a Card), the same MIDI Program Change rules apply as in the examples above. Just remember that when changing the Layer sound from the DG8’s front panel, the MIDI Program Change number is transmitted from the DG8 on the Basic Channel + 1. When sending the DG8 a Program Change command from another device in your rig with the intent of changing the Layer sound, be sure to send it to the DG8 on this Channel.

3.When a Bass Bank button is pressed, the DG8 recalls the last Bass Program that was used in that Bank and transmits its MIDI Program Number on the Basic Channel + 2.

If you use the ▲ or ▼ arrows to select another Bass Program in that Bank, the MIDI Program Number that corresponds to each Bass Program as it comes up in the display is also sent on the Basic Channel + 2.

MIDI Program Numbers 000 through 003 correspond to DG8 Bass Programs Acoustic Bass “A” through “D”; MIDI Program Numbers 004 through 007 correspond to DG8 Bass Programs Electric Bass 1 “A” through “D” and so on up to MIDI Program 027. Notice that the same range of MIDI Program Numbers are used for the Bass Programs as for the Keyboard and Card Programs. But not to worry: since Program Change messages are communicated on different MIDI Channels for Primaries, Layers and Splits, no conflicts should occur.
