CAUTION

Installing a cushion on a wheelchair may affect the center of gravity of the wheelchair and may cause the wheelchair to tip backwards, potentially resulting in injury. Always assess for the potential need for anti-tippers or amputee axle adapter brackets to be added to the wheelchair to help increase stability.

The J-Gel cushion is designed to provide sitting comfort and postural support as well as to help reduce the incidence of skin breakdown. However, no cushion can completely eliminate sitting pressure or prevent skin breakdown. The J-Gel cushion is not a substitute for good skin care including: proper diet, cleanliness and regular weight shifts/ pressure reliefs. In addition, prior to prolonged sitting, any cushion should be tried for a few hours at a time while a clinician inspects your skin to ensure that red pressure spots are not developing.

Users should ensure their skin is inspected daily for signs of skin breakdown. The clinical indicator for tissue breakdown is skin redness. If your skin develops redness, discontinue the use of the cushion immediately and consult your doctor or therapist. If you require a higher pressure-relieving product for skin protection, ask your Sunrise Medical– Jay supplier for a free demonstration of any of the other Jay cushion products.

Do not leave the cushion outside overnight at temperatures below 40°F (5°C). Allow the cushion to warm to room temperature before using. Sitting on extremely cold or hot surfaces can cause skin damage.

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.

Avoid contact with any sharp objects or pointed edges that may tear or puncture the gel.

The J-Gel Cushion is free of natural rubber latex.

NOTE– To ensure the proper use of your cushion, please read these instructions and keep them for future reference.

FITTING A J-GEL CUSHION

A cushion should ideally be fitted to you by a health care professional. Place the cushion to the back of the chair with the material identification tags to the back, the contoured side facing up and the “bump” towards the front. The product label should be visible on the right side of the cushion. Adjust the footplates so your legs rest comfortably on the cushion. Lowering the footrests on your wheelchair may help to reduce the pressure on your ischial tuberosities (seat bones) and on your coccyx (tailbone).

NOTE– Proper foot adjustment may enhance sitting comfort. Also, avoid using the cushion on overly stretched seat upholstery. Replace stretched seat upholstery or purchase a Jay Solid seat insert for your cushion. Avoid using overly stretched backrest upholstery. Stretched upholstery does not provide adequate support for the body and improper positioning may result. Replace stretched backrest upholstery or purchase a back support product from Sunrise that is appropriate for you. Contact a Sunrise Medical– Jay supplier for a free demonstration of these products.
