Network File System

The file-sharing protocol used in UNIX networks. This is one of the protocols that can be used

(NFS)

for accessing files on an HSM file system from a remote machine, particularly a Linux client.

offline file

A file whose contents were migrated to one or more FSE media (according to the number of

 

copies defined), and then removed from the HSM file system. The header and extended

 

attributes of an offline file are left intact and remain on the HSM file system. An offline file

 

becomes online at an FSE user's request, when its contents are recalled from the FSE media.

offline medium

An FSE medium which is temporarily put out of operation and physically removed from the FSE

 

library.

online file

A file on an HSM file system that is ready to be used by an application. A file is online

 

immediately after it is stored on the HSM file system, regardless of whether it was newly created

 

or recalled from FSE media. An online file becomes offline when it is released.

online medium

An FSE medium that is physically present in the FSE library and which does not have its status

 

set to unusable.

ordinary LAN

A network, usually a company LAN, to which systems are attached using their primary network

 

adapters.

ordinary LAN

A connection between parts of the FSE implementation which uses ordinary LAN for

connection

communication purposes.

package

A package with FSE software that will be installed to an FSE implementation.

(FSE package)

 

partition

A configurable entity used by the FSE implementation to split the storage and configure it

(FSE partition)

according to user requirements. Each FSE partition is related to a single HSM file system and

 

one or more FSE media pools. It has its own policies, File System Catalog, and Hierarchical

 

Storage Management Database.

Partition Manager

An FSE daemon (service) that executes and controls the migration, release, and recall processes

(PM)

for a single FSE partition, according to the policies defined in the FSE partition configuration

 

file. The Partition Manager process name is fse-pm.

performance disk

A disk with a high throughput which stores HSM file systems. Depending on the location of a

 

particular HSM file system, it needs to be locally mounted either on the consolidated FSE system

 

or on an external FSE client.

primary storage

A logical volume (disk partition) used to store the HSM file system.

space

 

private network

A dedicated network to which systems are attached using their secondary network adapters.

private network

A connection between parts of the FSE implementation which uses private network for

connection

communication purposes.

process

A process running on an FSE implementation that performs FSE-specific tasks.

(FSE process)

 

recall policy

A rule by which recall jobs for files on an HSM file system are conducted. Since recall is started

 

either implicitly or explicitly on an FSE user's request, the only configurable parameter specifies

 

the maximum time the user should wait for the file to become online. This parameter is defined

 

in the FSE partition configuration file. Each FSE partition has its own recall policy.

recall retention time

A period of time during which a recalled file is kept online before it is released again. See also
