The Stitch and Its Uses

The Shell Stitch is formed by sewing a blind hem over folded fabric. Several

rows of shell stitching are called shell tucks.

Shell stitching can be used to finish hems, sleeve and neck openings.

Shell _cking can be used to create

scalloped tucks on blouses and

lingerie.

Here's How

1.For best effect:

-set the stitch length as you desire.

--you may need to tighten the top thread tension slightly.

- allow the needle to just clear the folded edge of the fabric when it zigzags.

2.If you sew rows of shell stitches, space the rows 1/2" apart.

You can sew Shell Stitch on knits or soft silky wovens in any direction.

With the stitch length at "4", sew

straight stitching lines 3/8" apart across the area to be smocked.

Knot the threads along one edge, Pull the bobbin threads and distribute the

gathers evenly. Secure the threads at

the other end. Sew the decorative stitch between the gathering stitches. Pull out the ga_ering stitches.

NOTE: Loosen the top thread

tension to make gathering easier.
