What is a Fire Rated Exhaust Fan?

The Air King Fire Rated Exhaust Fan Series consists of a three part system designed to meet the NFPA’s (National Fire Protection Association) Standard 90A. The unit consists of a Housing, a Ceiling Radiation Damper that is ULC Classified and rated for 3 - 4 hour fire resistance, and the Motor/Blade/Grill. When all three of these parts are used together they create a Fire Rated Exhaust Fan.

What does a Fire Rated Exhaust Fan Do?

The Fire Rated Exhaust Fan Series is designed to automatically shut off and seal the duct from the rest of the dwelling once the temperature of air passing through the damper exceeds that of the fusible link. This prevents the spread of smoke or fire through the ducting system to the other rooms or dwellings.

Why do I need a Fire Rated Exhaust Fan?

Your local code will dictate if and what type of Fire Rated Exhaust Fan you will need. Generally any time a common duct is used in a multi-dwelling situation, a Fire Rated Exhaust Fan will be required to prevent fire from using the common ducting to spread from one dwelling to the next. This is usually true in commercial and multi-family housing constructions.
