Chapter 3: MIDI Functions

CHANNEL MESSAGES: MODE MESSAGES

There are four types of messages that determine the MIDI Mode of the instrument. The “mode” of a device refers to how it will respond to incoming MIDI data. The MIDI Specification outlines four possible modes and the DG8 implements a modified version of one of these four modes called “Mode 3: Omni Off/Poly”.

Mode 3 describes how polyphonic instruments in general receive notes on one Channel only. But as we discovered on page 55, the DG8 uses multiple MIDI Channels when communicating with other devices. Three successive MIDI Channels are designated to communicate data: Primary Sounds and Layers transmit and receive on the Basic Channel except Program Change commands for Layers, which happen on the next higher Channel (Basic Channel +1); Splits transmit and receive on the next higher Channel (Basic Channel + 2). For an in-depth look at how this is implemented on the DG8, see page 58.
