The shuffle key advances the iPod device’s shuffle settings as follows:
Shuffle off > Shuffle songs > Shuffle albums.
The repeat button advances the iPod device’s repeat settings like this:
Repeat off > Repeat one > Repeat all.
Follow the icons on the iPod device’s screen to see the current settings, represented by small icons on the upper right, below the battery status indicator.
