Printing Received Faxes
Difficulty Suggestions
Condensed print and white streaks
across the page or the top and
bottom of sentences are cut off.
You probably had a bad connection, with static or interference on the telephone
line. Ask the other party to send the fax again.
Vertical black lines when receiving. The sender's scanner may be dirty. Ask the sender to make a copy to see if the
problem is with the sending machine. Try receiving from another fax machine.
Received colou r fax prints only in
black and white.
Replace the colour ink cartridges that are empty or nearly empty, and then ask the
other person to send the colour fax again. (See Replacing the ink
cartridgeson page 119.)
Left and Right margi ns are cut of f or
a single page is printed on two
pages.
Turn on Auto Redu ction. (See Printing a reduced incoming faxon page 40.)
Phone Line or Connections
Difficulty Suggestions
Dialling does not work. (No dial
tone)
Check that the ma chine is plugged in and switched on.
Check all line cord connec tions.
Change Tone/Pul se setting. (See the Quick Setup Guide.) (Not available in New
Zealand.)
Lift the externa l phone’s handse t, (on the machi ne’s handset or cordless handse t
if available), and then dial the number to send a manual fax.
Wait to hear fax receiving t one before pressing MonoS tart or ColourStart.
The machine does n ot answer
when called.
Check all line cord connec tions.
Make sure the machine is in the correct receiv ing mode for your setup.
(See Choosing the Recei ve Mode on page 37.) C heck for a dial tone. If pos sible,
call your machine to hear it answer. If there is still no answer, check the telephone
line cord connection. If there is no ringing when you call your machine, ask your
telephone company to check the line.

If you often have interf erence on the phone line , try changing the menu set ting of
Compatibility to Basic or Normal. (See Compatibility on page 118.)
