Cada marca de la escala vertical tiene un valor de 5 MIL (1 Mil es equivalente a un ángulo que puede determina un objeto que mide un metros de altura a una distancia de 1000 metros). Por

lo tanto, si una carta de navegación le proporciona la altura de un objeto, con

solo divisarlo y contando el número de MIL, puede determinar a qué distancia

está. Puede aplicar las dos fórmulas siguientes:
